Red wines are not typically very sweet but if you do want something to drink with dinner that is not dry at all, I would go with an Australian red. The warm temps in Australia allow for the grapes to get really ripe, thus leading to a sweeter, fruity, big berry wine. There are many good value Australian Shiraz on the market, I might suggest: Rosemount, Penfolds, Cookothama, St Hallett, D’arenburg to name a few gems. But again it’s not going to be really sweet like say a reisling or a gewurtz. If you want something that is really actually sweet and red I would suggest a dessert wine. Paradise Ranch makes an absolutely beautiful Merlot Ice Wine. It’s like a glass of fresh strawberries and pairs marvelously with a nice bitter chocolate dessert, goats cheesecake or just on it’s own in place of dessert. Warning do not try to drink this with your dinner though, it will not work!!
Sangria! My favorite..It isn’t really wine, so much as it is a punch made from several wines.
Both upmarket or downmarket taste about the same, and in fact the downmarket (Boone’s)might taste even better.
good call on the sangria, but it is a drink made with wine and not a real wine as mentioned. kind of like saying that drinking a wine cooler is drinking wine. anyhow, try a white zinfandel. they are the perfect "starter wine" for folks looking to just get into wine. they also happen to be the cheapest and are mostly sweet. not sure where you live, but any of the popular brands (mondavi, sutter home, kj) will do you right. start there, and then try to make a progression to the sweeter whites (riesling, etc)… doesnt hurt to try and try and try…
your best best if you are not a big wine drinker is sticking to merlot or shiraz. A good "cheap" one is the Mouton Cadet Merlot (French) about $7, also try Australian wines, they tend to be smoother. Dont buy a super cheap one unless it’s a $2chuck, go at least $7 and up.

If you can get your hands on any "Red Table Wine" from PA or NY, it should be what you are looking for.

Try Port.
Port is a fortified sweet red wine. Made mostly in Portugal but also can be found from various parts of the world, Port wine is a partially fermented red grape wine with Brandy added. As a result, you end up with a sweet wine with high alcohol content.
A wonderful Port wine will be sweet like chocolate and a bit syrupy, with lots of grape taste. Port is a real wine, unlike Sangria or other types of wines with additive. Many serious wine drinkers enjoy Port and keep Port as part of their collection.
You can get a bottle of Port priced anywhere from $10/bottle to $150/bottle. Try cheaper Sandeman Port ($10), Dow’s ($10), Taylor ($10). If you are in California, try V. Sattui Vintage Port ($30), Heitz Port ($25).
California red zinfandels,pinot noirs and some merlots but check the label on the back of the bottle.
Zinfandels can be very sweet and fruity. Some Zins can be peppery….and some have combinations of both. For a sweet Zin….try this one:
